The OffBeat #58: Half Note / Whole Note
Something to read, something to think about, something else
Something to read:
Why are debut novels failing to launch?
Organizing devices are actually clutter
Why do we feel the need to give advice?
What kinds of books did Americans read growing up, and what do they read now?
Something to think about:
“Discipline is not a lack of freedom, it is a harmonious relationship with time.” — Rick Rubin, The Creative Act
Something else:
While I’m on parental leave with my second son, I’ve been spending a lot of time on *beverages*. I realized just how much more glassware I’ve been using by virtue of not being in my home office all day limited to my Shipt water bottle and an endlessly refilled Ember coffee mug. There’s also breast milk and formula on the brain, but the beverages I’m talking about are fun. Warm-weather favorites:
Available online
Plain seltzer mixed with Kosterina crushed fruit vinegar: Perfect for fans of shrubs and sour beers
Athletic non-alcoholic Run Wild IPA: I have tried alllllllllll the non-alc IPAs, and keep coming back to this O.G. (which also has happily become more available at bars and venues). Other Athletic favorites: Marionberry Sour and Blueberry Lemon Radler
Hobby Farmer’s Switchel Fizz: I discovered this at dinner with colleagues in Minneapolis at Owamni and ordered a case of the turmeric flavor when I got home; if you’re into apple cider vinegar you’ll love this—it’s like woke kombucha
Wandering Bear vanilla cold brew: Just the best, especially with a splash of cream and in a 500-degree East Coast heat wave 🥵
Local in Philly
Highline Espresso Lemonade from Rival Bros: Earl Grey simple syrup, lemon juice, Fever-Tree citrus soda, espresso, lemon garnish 🍋
Nitro Cold Brew Mazagran from Porco’s Porchetteria: Fresh OJ and nitro cold brew 🍊
