The OffBeat #55: Half Note / Whole Note
Something to read, something to think about, something else
Something to read:
The particular pleasure of the Internet rec
What if you put “mom” on your resume?
Why Gen Z is still on Facebook
The enduring strain of working parents’ juggle between career and family
Something to think about:
“There’s no such thing as work life balance. There’s simply life. And you spend part of your life at work.
One way to change the pressure of work is to expand or contract the size of the container that holds it.
If you’ve found a way to make a living, the challenge in making a life is to find the guts to think about the size of your work container.”
— Seth Godin
Something else:
This feels very 2014, but I have a few recommendations for apps I’ve recently downloaded that are delivering value for me, along with—because why not?—a related book recommendation for each:
Seek: Image recognition to identify plants and animals; it’s super easy and effective and makes me feel more plugged in to the environment and my community (you can see what species are native to your area)
Related book rec: The Overstory by Richard Powers | nine Americans’ experiences with trees bring them together to address forest destruction
Daily Meal Planner: Easy peasy meal plan calendar, great if you have kiddos in the house or complicated dietary needs
Related book rec: Fair Play by Eve Rodsky | a new way to divvy up domestic responsibilities
Hello Weather: An aesthetically pleasing, easy-to-digest weather app that (with the paid version) lets you choose what source to pull forecast data from
Related book rec: In an Instant by Suzanne Redfearn | my favorite inclement-weather-set book; a devastating car accident during a snowstorm leads to impossible choices
For double the reading recommendations, a.k.a. a Whole Note, including why working with your hands is good for your brain and a guide to American museums to visit this year, keep reading.
